Pg. 18

"Night. No one prayed, so that the night would pass quickly. The stars were only sparks of the fire would devoured us. Should that fire die out one day, there would be nothing left in the sky but dead stars, dead eyes. There was nothing else to do but get into bed, in the beds of the absent ones; to rest, to gather, one's strength".

Chapter 1

Overview

Chapter 1: Wiesel grew up in Sighet, a small town in Translyvania. He is a strict Orthodox Jew who is tutored by Moishe the Beadle. When all foreign Jews are expelled, Moishe is deported. He returns to Sighet with horrific tales. Nobody believes him.

Fascists gain control in Hungary and allow the Nazis to come. The Jews of Sighet remain in denial that anything bad will happen to them. Days later the town is ordered to evacuate. Eliezer's family is part of the last group. Their former Gentile servant, Maria, warns them of impending danger and offers them a place of refuge. They refuse.

Night and Fog

The Holocaust comes from the Greek phrase "burnt offering". There were many very disturbing things that happened during the Holocaust. They are often times too terrible to even think about. But we must not forget. It is important to remember history so we do not repeat it. Below is a link to the 1955 short film called "Night and Fog". This film is extremely disturbing and you should be warned beforehand. This is something right out of a horror film, except it isn't a horror film. It is a documentary. If you do watch it, please write a reply about the film either to this blog OR hand it in for class tomorrow. This will be an extra 5 points added on to your first test of "Night". 1)what are your thoughts about this film? 2) Does it make you have greater understanding about what it must have been like for a Jew living in the 1940's? 3) If you had the ability to go back in time and warn the Jews what would you tell them? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXWlIgWEPmI
