Chapter 1 : Vocabulary

Night is an extraordinarily powerful book. There are many words in the first chapter that have to do with WWII and the Jewish faith. To make it easier here is a quick overview of some of the more era specific vocabulary in this chapter.

Synagogue- A Jewish Church
"Moishe the Beadle" Beadle means someone that works at a synagogue or parish.


Hasidic conservative branch of Judaism.
Phylacteries- are a set of small black leather boxes containing scrolls of parchment inscribed with verses from the Torah, which are worn by observant Jews during weekday morning prayers
Gestapo The official Secret Police of Nazi Germany. "
Lorries: Truck
Red Army: Russian Army

Truncheon- Baton
Billeted- lodging for a soldier, student, etc., as in a private home or nonmilitary public building.

  Farce- a ridiculous sham foolish show; mockery
