Chapter 1 : Vocabulary

Night is an extraordinarily powerful book. There are many words in the first chapter that have to do with WWII and the Jewish faith. To make it easier here is a quick overview of some of the more era specific vocabulary in this chapter.

Synagogue- A Jewish Church

"Moishe the Beadle" Beadle means someone that works at a synagogue or parish.


Hasidic conservative branch of Judaism.

Phylacteries- are a set of small black leather boxes containing scrolls of parchment inscribed with verses from the Torah, which are worn by observant Jews during weekday morning prayers

Gestapo The official Secret Police of Nazi Germany. "

Lorries: Truck

Red Army: Russian Army

Truncheon- Baton

Billeted- lodging for a soldier, student, etc., as in a private home or nonmilitary public building.

  Farce- a ridiculous sham foolish show; mockery

Night and Fog

The Holocaust comes from the Greek phrase "burnt offering". There were many very disturbing things that happened during the Holocaust. They are often times too terrible to even think about. But we must not forget. It is important to remember history so we do not repeat it. Below is a link to the 1955 short film called "Night and Fog". This film is extremely disturbing and you should be warned beforehand. This is something right out of a horror film, except it isn't a horror film. It is a documentary. If you do watch it, please write a reply about the film either to this blog OR hand it in for class tomorrow. Ellie Wiesel born September 30, 1928. He was a Romanian Born Jew. He was very religious and thought of the night time as a time to pray to God. He thought about becoming a Rabbi.

In 1941, Elie was a twelve-year-old boy who lived with his father, mother, and three sisters in a small village near the border of Romania and Hungary.
